5 Easy Ways to Help You With Your Sleeping Difficulties

A good night’s rest might just be the most important thing that our body needs. Sometimes we all have difficulty trying to fall asleep or finding that comfort zone, and nothing seems to work, only leaving us tired and drained. In fact, studies show that lack of sleep has various negative effects on both your physical and mental health. Your body is very dependent on rest. Without it, we will be lagging and our minds will be in a jumble for the majority of the day. In essence, getting a good night’s rest is detrimental and here are a few easy tips to help with your sleeping difficulties.

1. REDUCE STRESS IN THE BEDROOM

It might be a little difficult trying to meet deadlines, finishing up that work or project after work hours but don’t be stressed out! Give yourself time to relax. Leave your work in your office as much as possible. Your bedroom is not a workplace, in the first place. Try to reduce stress by giving yourself a break. Avoid using electronics in the bedroom as this will keep you up, especially if the latest episode of your favorite series is out, or you are excited to reach the highest level in Candy Crush. Another tip is to schedule out your evening once you get home from work or school. Instead of waiting until the last minute to write that paper, do it in intervals and set an end time. Before bedtime, take a nice, warm bath, get comfy, and wind yourself down to sleep. Turning off your devices will also help for a good rest as you won’t have the urge to pick up your phone whenever a notification buzzes in.

2. COUNT SHEEP

Yes, literally, you try to count sheep. Resting in position sometimes allows your mind to drift all over, so instead of thinking up a storm and start worrying about what you said 5 years ago, imagine a wall with fluffy sheep. If you prefer the 101 Dalmatians, then suit yourself. Creating a good sleeping habit is very essential. Studies show that if you fall asleep within the first five minutes of laying down, then your body is suffering from sleep deprivation. Allowing our minds to fully relax will help our bodies to meltdown. Writing a story in your head is another great way to relax the mind. As a kid, we all loved a good bedtime story; so bring back the princess and the castles while falling asleep.

3. AVOID LATE AND HEAVY MEALS

Though there are many factors that may lead to a difficulty in sleeping, I find that having a heavy meal before bed just won’t help either. Instead try to eat a light dinner at around 6 pm or 7 pm as heavy dinners will usually leave the body in turmoil, causing acid reflux and heartburn. This does not count for a goodnight’s rest. Furthermore, you can always try elevating your head to keep the reflux at a minimal and always give yourself at least four (4) hours after dinner to get a desired and much-needed sleep.

4. TRY CREATING A SCHEDULE THAT WORKS

Here are a few easy tips you can try;

* Try having a glass of warm milk or tea at least an hour before bedtime. Chamomile tea proves to be very soothing and will calm your nerves, relax your muscles, and aid in restful sleep.
* Having a warm bath too can contribute to a goodnights rest. It is refreshing and helps take away some of the days stress and relax your muscles after a long days work.
* Eating a banana about 30 minutes prior to dozing off can aid in getting a well-deserved sleep. This is a good treat for the body as it contains potassium and magnesium that help your muscles relax and give the body a sense of calmness.
* Meditate or try a few easy yoga poses. Simple stretches here and there can ease the body and put it into a sleep mode. This too can help the insomniac go into a restful state of sleep, clear your mind and body of stress, and allow you to let go of everything else that keeps you wide awake at night.

5. AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy is used in various spas to stimulate the psychological and physical well being. This practice uses essential oils that can even stimulate brain functions and also has amazing healing
properties. To relieve stress and promote sleep, I find that lavender is the most soothing essential oil that can help to promote a goodnight’s rest. It calms the nervous system, lowers blood
pressure and can even change brain waves. This can be diffused in the air or added to your warm bath. It smells great and in fact, studies show that scents can trigger memories, especially comforting ones to put you sound asleep. Try a scent to soothe you to sleep and feel the difference.

Everyone deserves a full night’s rest. We all deserve to be fully rested and relaxed when we wake up. Feeling good going to bed will have us waking up with a good start and heightened senses. The simple tips above will have you dozing away in no time wondering what the big fuss was all about. The best time to sleep will always be during the night. Be good to your body and grab a full night’s rest always.
